From the Blog folks about spam

Here's the comment from some folks who work for lifetype, the software that this blog runs on.  Has anyone been having lots of trouble with spam lately?

Matt

I'll use this message as a confirmation that your add-on spam filter is working.

Also, to clarify your above comment, there are three anti-spam filters installed on this blog:

1. badbehavior: this guy looks at IP addresses, access behavior (ie. did the commenter read the post before commenting?), commenting lots of times in a row, browser characteristics, etc. This works pretty well, although occasionally has issues with new search engines, or new ISP proxies. This is a third party (ie. the lifetype developers didn't write it, and we update it as new releases come out)

2. bayesian filter: this "reads" the text of the comments, and based on past history of whether those keywords were used in the past spams, posts, etc. makes a statistical decision about whether your comment is spam.

3. hiddeninput: this is a nifty one that folks haven't figured out yet - it is better than the image/number methods, since regular users can't fail it, and almost all spammers do.

Lastly, if you simply mark the comments as spam, the blog administrator can hit the "purge" button and delete all spam in one blow.

Also, once hiddeninput is working properly, those comments won't show up on your dashboard at all, so you likely won't have very many you need to mark as spam anyway.

Spam - Finding a way to get rid of it

I know that the spam in the comments thing is really annoying.  I'm working on a way to get rid of it.  Los, I've read your posts so don't think that they're not interesting enough for someone to read (that was in reference to your comment on heavenlyfire's post about spam).  So I'll keep you posted about the ways that I am getting rid of the spam posts.  Take it easy and thanks to everyone who blogs here.

Small change of URL

Folks,

Sorry about this.  I've been having trouble getting the individual blogs to be indexed by google and I'm trying something out here.  As a result, the URLs of your blogs have changed a little bit.  Instead of http://blogcentral.brewersroundtable.com/username the URL is not http://blogcentral.brewersroundtable.com/blog/username.  I hope this works in getting the blogs indexed by good old google.  Please post back with any questions.  Take it easy and thanks a lot.

My appologies about the porn site

Brewers,

I'm sorry about the blog that was on this site that was simply a link to some porn site and apparently it had some viruses attached to it also.  That was obviously not meant to be part of this site and I humbly appologize for it being here.  This is a place to talk about beer brewing and winemaking, not post stuff like that.

Thank you very much for visiting.

Matt
